In March of 2006, the 4th generation of Maple Farms was started. The sons of Tom, Mark, and Scott wanted to begin their farming journey. Together Daryl, Jason, Ryan, and Aaron Maple decided to follow in the footsteps of their family and embark in a partnership together to start farming ground. They wanted to start a partnership so they could begin to take what they learned from Purdue and apply it to the real world. They were able to find some ground to rent and now they are in their 7th year farming together in 2012.
The Maples have been farming for well over 100 years! It is a tradition and a legacy that continues to this day. Maple Farms is a family farm that has been operating under that name since 1975. We have been in our current location since 1930. We are devoted to high quality agricultural production with an emphasis on cooperative management with honesty and integrity.We continue to focus on being good farmers but also improving marginal farms through an organized work force utilizing the latest in GPS technology and up to date record keeping. Today there are 3 generations of Maples working together. Bill and Charlie, sons of Clifford Maple, are brothers who each have sons working on the farm. Tom, the son of Charlie, has been working ever since he graduated from high school in 1974. Mark and Scott, sons of Bill, are also working. Mark started farming after returning from Purdue in 1976 and Scott returned home to farm in 1994 after a 12 year stint in teaching. In 2007, Tom\'s oldest son, Daryl, graduated from Purdue with a degree in Agriculture Economics and returned home to farm. In 2010, Tom\'s youngest son, Jason also returned home from Purdue with a degree Ag Systems Management.

Maple Farms is committed to growing high quality crops. We grow approximately 53% corn, 45% soybeans, and 2% wheat on the farm. Not only do we produce the traditional crops, we produce specialty crops within the corn, soybeans, and wheat rotation. We believe it is a good management tool to handle such a variety of different crops that entail a multitude of different management practices. This not only makes us valuable to the farm economy, it is also a way to attain premiums to help sustain the farm. We grow Non-GMO (Genetically Modified Organisms) Corn for a food processor, Seed Beans for Pioneer, and Seed Wheat for Pioneer. In addition to those, we have grown Waxy Corn, but due to a lack of demand we have gone away from this area. New for 2012 we are raising White Corn for the first time ever! As you can tell, we have a lot going on around the farm when springtime comes along and it lasts until we have brought all the crops in from the field.

In addition to the crops, we do custom work as well. We have a Speicher ditching machine and do custom ditching for clients. We believe that ditching your fields is a great way to improve your fields and makes you more profitable. We also have an excavator and can do demolition or dirt work with it as well as use it for ditching. Custom farming is another area we delve into for clients that may need this assistance.

There seems to be a lot of challenges on the horizon in agriculture. With the dramatic swings in the market prices, the ever increasing input prices, and general uncertainty of the country farming is a very challenging industry and we strive to make the best decisions for our operation and for our environment. We believe that we are well suited to adapt and make changes to our operation in order to face these future challenges.

\n

- Wheat harvest will begin this week as it has been hot and dry the wheat has cured out ahead of schedule.

- Some work continues on in the new tool shed. The loft and mechanical room were walled off last week and some finishing touches are needed to complete that area.

- This week there are several bushels of corn to be delivered and it is time to empty the big grain bin.

- Work will begin on trying to complete the loft area, and the mechanical room this week. Steel I beams and trusses need to be placed and welded. A dividing wall between the two rooms needs to be constructed. Metal siding needs to be hung.

- We are hauling Soybeans for the first part of the week and corn the rest of the week.

- Work is continuing on the new tool shed. Electrical conduit has been run in preparation for wiring the building soon. Two walls are being constructed on the interior and that will finish the structure of the building.

- Some ditching was done but it has been a tough go because of the precipitation in the ground.
\n
- Maple Farms Christmas Dinner will be held this Friday!

We are capable of doing excavation work to meet your needs. If you need a hole dug, we have a backhoe and an excavator. If you need buildings torn down we have plenty of experience in tearing down buildings as well. We are capable of tearing out fence rows or taking out entire woods. We have the tools needed to do any of these jobs.

When Bill and Charlie first began operation of the farm, the business of the farm was handled as a simple partnership.As their families grew, they saw advantages to incorporating the family farm.Maple Farms, Inc. became the umbrella under which all of the farm production was run for more than 40 years to come.Then, in the mid-1990’s, as Tom, Mark and Scott began to take on renting more ground on their own, the need became apparent for a second entity.The partnership that resulted was given the name TMS Farms.

In 1998, TMS Farms decided to purchase a tile ditching machine in order to take care of the drainage needs on the ground they operated as well as do custom work for others in the area.It was decided then that this part of the business should be a separate enterprise which was given the name Maple Drainage, LLC.
\n

As the fourth generation of Maple’s became more involved with the operation, they also formed a partnership to rent and operate land.They named the partnership Maple Agricultural Enterprises or Maple Age for short.

Rental Agreements
\n
\n
Maple Farms, Inc. operates under a variety of lease arrangements in order to cater to the desires of their various landowners.These range from cash rent to custom farming depending on the amount of involvement and risk the owner is interested in taking on.
\n
\n
Cash Rent Agreement
\n
With a straight Cash Rent Lease, the landowner is paid a flat amount annually for the use of their land.
\n
\n
Flex Rent Agreement
\n
With a Flex Rent, the landowner is paid a rate that is slightly less than the normal cash rent rate and then they are paid a bonus at the end of the season.The bonus is based on the yield on their farm and the price of the commodity grown.
\n
\n
Share Lease Agreement
\n
In a Share Lease, the landowner pays for a portion of the inputs (usually 50%) and then receives a comparable portion of the crop which they can market on their own.This allows the owner to take full advantage of high yields and prices without the burden of the machinery or labor demands.

This Partnership was started by Mark, Tom, and Scott to rent ground of their own. They formed this in the mid 90\'s and still use this to rent their ground
In 1930, Clifford Maple and his wife Edna purchased a 160 acre tract of land in Taylor Township of Howard County. This was the beginning of what is now known as Maple Farms, Inc., a 3rd generation farm transitioning to a 4th generation farm. Although that same farmstead still serves as the hub of the operation, this family business produces a variety of different crops.
\n
\n
Approximately half of the land the Maple\'s farm is owned by family members and the other half is rented. Some of the land that is currently operated was initially rented in the early 1960’s. Many of the current landlords began renting to the operation over 20 years ago. Having numerous landlords, there are also numerous varieties of rental agreements.
\n
\n
These range anywhere from the straight cash rent agreement to the traditional 50/50 share crop arrangement. Between these two extremes, there are several cash rent arrangements which are tied to the land’s production. The arrangement which works best depends on the amount of risk the landowner wants to take on. For the landowner who is willing to take all of the risk (and like wise receive all of the reward) without the burden of machinery or labor, the option of a custom agreement can also be considered.

In 2007, Tom’s oldest son Daryl completed a degree in Ag. Economics at Purdue and in 2010 Tom’s youngest son Jason completed a degree in Ag. Systems Management (ASM). They have both since returned to the farm as full time employees. They mark the beginning of the fourth generation of Maple Farms. Ryan Maple (son of Mark) has also graduated from Purdue in 2010 with a degree in Ag. Economics and is currently working for Reynolds John Deere store in Lebanon, IN but helps the farm part time. Additionally, two more family members, Kyle (son of Mark) and Aaron (son of Scott) graduated in May 2011 from Purdue University with bachelor degrees in Agri-business and Ag Systems Management. In addition to the family members, the farm has two full time employees, Leonard Surber, who has over forty years of farm experience and Matt Pall who is in his 3rd year of farming.
For many years, the members of our operation have recognized the impact that proper drainage can have on profitability.As the demand for drainage work increased during the 1990’s, we found it increasingly difficult to hire a quality contractor to install drainage tile in a timely manner.There was such a demand, that in 1998, TMS Farms decided to purchase a Spiecher wheel ditching machine in order to take care of the drainage needs on the ground they operated as well as do custom work for others in the area.It was decided then that this part of the business should be a separate subsidiary enterprise which was given the name Maple Drainage, LLC.

Although our primary motivation behind starting this business was to address drainage problems on land we owned and land we farmed, the business has grown to also include a significant amount of custom drainage work.The income from this business has allowed us to grow our equipment fleet to provide a wide range of drainage and excavation services.We provide these services to anyone needing field drainage which increases the productivity of their farm and the value of their property.

More recently the need has arose to expand the ditching business.There is too much demand for tile ditching in the area and we could not keep up ditching part time, so we have decided to place Daryl in charge of the ditching operation to increase the productivity of this business. Maple Farms also hired a new employee to help out in this endeavor. They hired Matt Pall who works along side Daryl to install tile. The two of them can ditch while the rest of the team can work on farming activities or help Daryl and Matt ditch. This maximizes the productivity of the farming and ditching operations. The two of them will be working in the middle of the fall clear through the early Spring to try and lay as much tile as possible.Additionaly the hope is that with the advancement of technology, pattern tiling, and drainage management, there will be increased demand for farmers to implement new practices.
Maple Farms continued to grow in the mid-1990’s, as Tom, Mark, and Scott started a partnership together. The partnership that resulted was given the name TMS Farms. Together they grew the partnership and now they are the biggest renting entity on the farm. They combine the knowledge they each have and make one great team!
